Menagerie
Menagerie

Blurb:
From New York Times bestselling author Rachel Vincent comes a richly imagined, provocative new series set in the dark mythology of the Menagerie…

When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger's Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quite-ordinary world. But under the macabre circus black-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah in her black swan burlesque costume is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she's forced to "perform" in town after town.

But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other "attractions"—mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpies—are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she'll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed.

Renowned author Rachel Vincent weaves an intoxicating blend of carnival magic and startling humanity in this intricately woven and powerful tale.

4 Stars;

I picked this book up on a whim and I'm glad I did.

The Metzger's Menagerie has come to town and Delilah's boyfriend has tickets for them. There she see's all sorts of hybrid and other animal/human/fae oddities. If is here that Delilah bares witness to a werewolf cub being shocked to perform for the humans. The anger rages thru Delilah, until she isn't herself any more. But something that belongs in the Menagerie. Shuffled away to the police station it is there that the owner of Metzger's, Rudy approaches with a financial offer. He'll take her, she is rare, so rare, he doesn't know what she is. *GASP*

Mockingjay Part II

Off to the movies this afternoon with my partner in crime.  Can't wait to see this!  Are you going?

Death Before Decaf - Murder Mystery - Java Jive Mystery - Book Review

NetGalley gave me copy of this book, for an honest review.  I never was one for the mystery genre.  But this was not so heavy that I couldn't get into it.  That's a plus for me!  I really like Jules and Pete and Ryder -HEY!  And I'm hooked now, because I want to know what's going to happen!!

Blurb:

Perfect for fans of Janet Evanovich and Diane Mott Davidson, Caroline Fardig’s captivating new mystery novel takes readers behind the counter of a seemingly run-of-the-mill coffeehouse . . . where murder is brewing.

After her music career crashes and burns spectacularly, Juliet Langley is forced to turn to the only other business she knows: food service. Unfortunately, bad luck strikes yet again when her two-timing fiancé robs her blind and runs off with her best waitress. Flushing what’s left of her beloved café down the toilet with her failed engagement, Juliet packs up and moves back to her college stomping grounds in Nashville to manage an old friend’s coffeehouse. At first glance, it seems as though nothing’s changed at Java Jive. What could possibly go wrong? Only that the place is hemorrhaging money, the staff is in open revolt, and Juliet finds one unlucky employee dead in the dumpster out back before her first day is even over.

The corpse just so happens to belong to the cook who’d locked horns with Juliet over the finer points of the health code. Unimpressed with her management style, the other disgruntled employees are only too eager to spill the beans about her fiery temper to the detective on the case. Add to the mix a hunky stranger who’s asking way too many questions, and suddenly Juliet finds herself in some very hot water. If she can’t simmer down and sleuth her way to the real killer, she’s going to get burned.

5 Stars

Juliet moves back home to her stomping grounds and take over running her BFF, Pete's coffee house - Java Jive.  The staff is less than enthusiastic about her being there.    They make it rough on her, Dave especially likes to rub her the wrong way.  Being on friendly terms is the least of her problems when Dave ends up dead in the dumpster!  And she is the coppers main suspect.  What's a girl to do ?  Well in Jules case, she plays Sherlockholms and goes sleuthing for the truth.  But Dave's death isn't the only fishy thing going on around Jules, there is also the hot professor, Seth, but something seems off with him too.  Can she undercover everything?  Or will she end up dead in the processes?

I love the chemistry between Pete and Jules, that spark is there, they just need to crash together to make it happen.  But I like Ryder too!  It's a toss up for me.  Gertie is a freaking riot!!  This book has plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing.  When the ending finally came, I was so shocked!  But in a good way.  Everything was answered.

Really great book!  Brilliant book, kept me hooked and wanting to know more about what is going on.

Persuasion - MC Book Review - NetGally - ARC

The release date of this book is December 16th, 2015

Blurb:

If you love the motorcycle romances of Joanna Wylde and Julie Ann Walker, don’t miss Violetta Rand’s irresistible novel about a sexy-as-sin biker who tempts a good girl to go bad.

Lang Anderson may be the new leader of the Sons of Odin motorcycle club, but his personal life is in shreds. He’s struggling to take care of his three young sisters in the wake of tragedy, while rumors of drug dealing within his ranks jeopardize everything he’s built. The last thing he needs is another distraction—like a bar brawl over a woman—but Lang is a sucker for a damsel in distress. And this one gets him roaring like a finely tuned engine.

High school guidance counselor Lily Gallo is no fender bunny. So why can’t she get Lang off her mind? Lily’s head says the rugged, rough-and-tumble biker who came to her aid is bad news. Her body begs to differ. But when Lang’s troubled kid sister walks into her office, Lily’s determined to help, even if it puts her in the crossfire of a gang war. On a crash course with danger and desire, Lily partners up with Lang to fight for his family—and for love.

3 stars

NetGalley sent me a review copy.

Lily is running away from her mom & dad and their impending Divorce. She takes a job in Texas, where everything is bigger, even egos. There she meets Lang, a MC Prez, at a bar, where he rescues her from other MC. He's doing the best he can to raise his 3 little sisters after the death of their parents. But he is struggling with Maya. The school set up a counselor for Maya, it happens to be Lily. Lang can't get Lily out of his head, he wants her, just as bad as she wants him.

Lang tries to be a badass, but he seems fake, like he doesn't really want to be there. Lily, she annoyed me after awhile. Lang schooled her on MC old ladies, yet she still got pissy about it. If you want the man, you take the entire package. Not bits and pieces and what works for you.

I liked this book, but there wasn't enough climax, both sexually and plot. My heart never jumped up to my throat in terror. And my heart never raced with the sex scenes, they were glossed over. Where other less important things were given depth, like the step mom's engagement ring. I know we like to keep things up to the reader to use their imagination, but I felt like enough wasn't given. Did it take away from the story? No. But it didn't help either. The two things that happened, one to Maya and one to Lily, seemed like no big deal. I expected a war. I expected Lang to throttle the person on his own.

When I Found You - Book Club Book Review

Blurb:

When Nathan McCann discovers a newborn baby boy half buried in the woods, he assumes he's found a tiny dead body. But then the baby moves and in one remarkable moment, Nathan's life is changed forever.

The baby is sent to grow up with his grandmother, but Nathan can't forget him and is compelled to pay her a visit. He asks for one simple promise - that one day she will introduce the boy to Nathan and tell him, 'This is the man who found you in the woods.'

Years pass and Nathan assumes that the old lady has not kept her promise, until one day an angry, troubled boy arrives on his doorstep with a suitcase . . .

Book club selected this book for the month of November. not my choice, but after reading it, I'm glad I did.

On a cool, crisp fall morning Nathan and Sadie are out hunting ducks. But Sadie wanders off and finds something better than ducks. She finds a small child. From this act alone, Nathan and this child are forever connected with an unbreakable bond. No matter what. Did you read that, no matter what!

The child is named Nathan, after than man who finds him, but goes by Nat. He is raised by his grandma, who is dreadful. Nat has one constant in his life, the man who found you in the woods, remembers his birthday and Christmas every year. Time passes and like any other youth Nat gets into trouble. His grandma is fed up and hands him over to Nathan. But unlike everyone else Nathan stands beside Nat. He doesn't stand in front of him or behind him. Beside him. Always there to support him. To guide him in life. To show Nat that he matters.

The writing wasn't the strongest and it was an easy read, almost like a high school creative writing project. But still good. It's not so deep and heavy that you won't enjoy it and it's not all light and airy. There are things you have to think about. Thing you need to mull over and figure out. Are the people in your life worth being around and showing that you care and will stick by them, thru thick and thin?

The characters were ok, typical, but ok. The kid naturally has a chip on his shoulder and is bitter. Nathan is a childless man, who is devoted to the kid and a freaking saint. Grandma is just mean and dreadful, because Nat is a horrible bitter child. Carol, is a rug who hangs around and gets to know Nathan. Why was Carol even still there? That annoyed me. His mom is a horrible person for abandoning him.

EXCERPT

I think I will enjoy my time here.

Very much.

I’m taking in that magnificent view while I swirl a glass of red wine. Sometimes a girl gets lucky. It’s well past midnight now, but I can’t sleep. Beyond the beauty of my surroundings, of the warmth on my skin this late in the year, is the sound of the sea. I am truly alone in my own little nirvana. No one knows where I am, and I don’t care.

There’s a flash of movement from the corner of my eye. Maybe I’m not as alone as I thought. My heart flutters a little. Then I see him walking the beach towards the water, under the great moon above. My magnificent view just got even more spectacular. He’s fully naked.

My attention is riveted now as I sip my wine. I can’t see a lot of detail in the darkness, but I can see he is tall, with long hair. Nicely built, and if my eyes don’t deceive me, well-endowed as well. Now, this is a very interesting development.

I watch as he enters the water, and I shiver just a little as if my own skin was touched by the cool waters. He disappears momentarily beneath the dark sea, and emerges, throwing back his long hair. I know I should look away, I should respect his privacy, but I cannot. I am a voyeur in my own little world.

I’m not really sure how much time I spend watching him. Perhaps only a few minutes, maybe even an hour. He emerges from the waves, a mere silhouette now in the moonlight. He stops and looks straight to me. My first reaction is to want to drop to the floor. But my mind tells me he cannot see me in the darkness.

So, if he cannot see me, why does he stare in my direction?

The rules:

No dating.

No sex outside of the game.

No disclosing the terms of the contract.

Rules were made to be broken, right?

Eight weeks ago I signed a contract.  One that seemed like a good idea at the time.  A handsome bachelor, luxury accommodations, and a chance to win a prize my family desperately needed.  There were some rules though.  Lots of them actually.  Follow the script, no dating, sex, or disclosing the terms of the deal.  After my self-imposed moratorium on men the last year, it wouldn’t be hard to live up to my end of the bargain…so I thought.  Until I realized the deal I’d made was with the devil…and I was in love with his dirty-talking brother.

Excerpt

Every girl needs three things

  1.  A flutter in her belly when she meets him for the first time.

Meet Cooper

My lips brush the top of her hand lightly, my tongue sneaking out to fleetingly touch her skin.  The brief contact stirs an ache inside me.  This woman tugs at something—more than arousal—something that makes me want to slow down time just to spend a few more minutes standing here.

“Did you just…” she stammers a bit.

“Did I just what?”

She squints at me.  “You know.”

“Do I?”

“I felt your tongue on my hand.  You…you licked me.”

I’d been dying to run my tongue along her neck all evening, although I hadn’t really meant to be so crude about it.  It just sort of …happened.  “I wouldn’t say licked, maybe just a little taste.”

“So you tasted me?”

My entire body suddenly has interest in this conversation.  “I suppose I did.  But it wasn’t nearly enough.  That brings us back to my invitation for dinner.  Tomorrow night?”

“I can’t.”

“The day after then?”

She laughs and shakes her head.  The sound makes me smile.

“Good night, Cooper.”  She pulls the driver’s side door shut and leaves me standing there…for a full five minutes after she’s gone.

  1.  A best friend to talk about him to.

Meet Sadie

“And?”

“And I kissed him when we were in his office.”

“How was his office?”

“Really?  That’s what you want to know.  Not how was the kiss or aren’t you in breach of your contract?  How was his office?”

“You can tell a lot about a man by his office.”

I gulp another unladylike sip from my wine glass.  “His office was beautiful.  Sleek, overlooking the city.  It oozed power.”

“Nice.  Bet he fucks like he owns you.”

The thought of what he’s like in bed is enough to make me lose my train of thought.

“Go on,” Sadie prods.

I don’t continue immediately.

“You forgot what you were up to because you were thinking of him fucking you like he owns you, didn’t you?”  My best friend smirks knowingly.

“Shut up.”  I pause.  “Anyway, I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

“Well, him.  Obviously.”

“I wish it were that easy.”

  1.  A gentleman that turns into a bossy dirty talker in the bedroom.

Cooper – behind closed doors.

“You haven’t even begun to see bossy yet.  Tonight I’m going to tell you to do things, and you’re going to do them.  When I tell you to open wider, or take my cock deeper, you’re going to listen.  You know why?  Because since the moment we met, all I’ve wanted to do is make you feel good.  Hell, I don’t even need to get off physically.  Because I’m going to get off watching you every minute.  So, yeah, I’m going to be bossy.  Now let’s put the rest of this behind us.  Do you want to be with me tonight?”

After that prelude, I nod my head fast.  I’m no fool.  Who wouldn’t?

5Stars

Eight weeks is a blink of an eye in your life, but for Kate its eight weeks of a roller coaster ride.  She agreed to be on a new Scripted Reality TV show, Throb.  The single dude is a rock star, Flynn, tattoos and hot.  But then there is Cooper, who she played poker with, and is an all-around Alpha male.  Kate is in a conundrum.  She needs the money from the show to help her struggling family, but that means staying away from Cooper.  Can she do it?

Things between Cooper and Kate heat up, but then the ratings on the TV slump, because the girl next door Kate isn’t herself around Flynn.  Ratings speak, Miles, Cooper’s brother, offers Cooper a deal.  A nasty deal, but a deal none the less.  Will Flynn sing the song and get the girl next door?  Or will Cooper step up and take what was offered to him?

I’m usually not big into love triangles.  They annoy the shit out of me, but this one worked.  It worked because it wasn’t forced.  There was no sleeping around; there was no malice from the men towards Kate.  Both guys were great, at one point I was routing for them both.  *HUH?* I know right?!  Why can’t I take Flynn’s easy going attitude, tattoo, voice, and persona and add it to Cooper’s Alpha male-dom and money and stamina?  A mesh of both guys!

The three main characters are well written.  I understood their background and why they were doing what they were doing.  Flynn was looking for love, Kate needed the money, and Cooper, well he wasn’t looking for anything, it just landed in his lap.  But what he wasn’t looking for, found him in the end.  A well written book all around.  Glad I had the privilege to read this book early.  I’ll be pimping this out for weeks!

About the Author:

Vi Keeland is a native New Yorker with three children that occupy most of her free time, which she complains about often, but wouldn't change for the world. She is a bookworm and has been known to read her kindle at stop lights, while styling her hair, cleaning, walking, during sporting events, and frequently while pretending to work.  She is a boring attorney by day, and an exciting smut author by night!

The Canary Room - book review

Blurb:

In the spring of 1945, a young boy in the Pacific Northwest will make a life-or-death decision. Every morning, Herman "Hermy" Auerbach awakens to the pre-dawn song of canaries. The porch where he sleeps contains dozens of the songbirds. Outside, in the wider world, the Second World War enters its final, bloody months. Hermy comes to the Williams' house under protest after his parents' divorce, a result of his father leaving home initially to pursue his impossible dream of becoming an intelligence officer. Herman's mother, remarried to a sailor, abandons her son to move across the country and start another family with her new husband. By the time he takes up residency in the canary room, Hermy has already suffered both from abandonment and bullying. Life with the large, messy Williams clan offers Hermy little relief, although he bonds with the other boys in the family. When the boys hatch a wild escape plan, Hermy finds himself facing death, and deciding if his life is worth the struggle to survive after losing everything. A compelling story of one boy's struggle to survive the uncertainties of foster care and the war, The Canary Room brings to life the daily challenges of life on the US home front in vivid, historically accurate detail.

4 Stars

This is a well written story of Herman "Hermy" Auerbach, who is basically unwanted and abandoned by both of his parents for their own selfish reasons.  The setting is the end of WWII, the really gruesome part.  Hermy is left to live with the William's family and the other boys they are fostering.  Hermy, for all of his 12 years is a remarkable and brave child.  He is on a quest to figure out who he is.  The All American boy has some troubling past that you get caught up in.  Does Hermy find himself?  What happened to his dad?

I enjoyed the history that the book included, as well as the slang from the past.  It had a Leave it to Beaver quality to it.  Simpler times, but yet a harsh past.  At the William's house is was Leave it to Beaver but in the world outside it was hard, rough, and bullying.

The ending kind of hinted at book #2.  I hope this is true, I'd love to read more.

Wow! What a rush of a ride. I'm still not sure if she is crazy or it's just me. I think its' me! The mystery just kept going, leading me deeper and deeper into the dark without any real guidance. I did like it, because it intrigued me, but I felt like I was missing something, there was something happening without me knowing about it. I'm not sure what. That is the true mystery that keeps you hanging on.

What happened on their vacation that caused this delirium? And is it really delirium? And Sebastian is he there or is he a dream? And if that is a dream I don't want to wake up!

* Author's note: This story will unfold over the span of multiple Volumes. Not all secrets will be spilled yet in this prequel. Don't let this stop you from reading, though, because this series will be one heck of a ride. So open your mind and let me take you on a journey of delirious passion, unbendable trust, frightening illusions, dangerous secrets, shocking revelations, and disturbingly dark mind games. *

When illusions come to life, how do you tell what’s real?

My life ended when I came back from vacation. Death was at my doorstep. Everything ceased to exist. To protect myself, I pushed the memories away.
All I remember is him: Sebastian Brand, my savior.
I trust only him.
I am obsessed with him.
But all I know about him is his name.
Stuck in this mental institution, I try not to think about the terrible memories that lurk deep inside me. Sebastian is the only one who can help me forget. I don’t care that they say he doesn't exist, I need Sebastian and I will find him, no matter the cost.

This is a prequel to the Delirious Series. These books should be read in order.

WARNING: This series contains very disturbing situations, strong language, drugs and alcohol, and graphic violence.

Jane and Devin Colt are on a galactic quest to not only save themselves, but their future.   They travel throughout the galaxy to prove Devin’s innocence and to find Adam, Jane’s best friend.  Devin doesn’t have a clean past and that comes back to haunt him, making him prime suspect.  Jane and Devin both know he is innocent.  The No Name network is hard at work turning all the information on the Colt’s against them in every possible way that they can.  But with their friends, they manage to escape capture more times than not!  The action in this book is non-stop.  You think you are getting a breather and then BOOM right on you go!  Beware not everyone is as they seem.  Can Adam be saved?  Can Devin prove his innocence?

This is a fast pace space opera thriller!  Hang on for a rough ride that will have your emotions all over the place.  Jane and Devin also find themselves in this book.  They come out stronger and understand who they are.  I will admit I didn’t like Jane at first, she was a little childish, because she hadn’t accepted who she was at that point.  She was acting like she figured sister’s act.
